Cardiac Patient Recall in Belfast Trust

It has been reported today that the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust is to recall 163 cardiac patients treated by a Dr Ernest Lau within the Cardiac Unit following concerns regarding care.
It is understood that concerns have been raised regarding a number of cardiac surgeries carried out on patients which may require further review.
The Belfast Trust has faced previous scrutiny regarding the Cardiac Unit in recent years, including reports published in 2025 relating to concerns around culture and patient safety within the service.
Support for patients
We understand that news of a patient recall process may be deeply concerning for patients and families affected, particularly for those who are contacted directly by the Trust or who may already have concerns about treatment they have received.
At Thompsons Solicitors, we have experience supporting patients involved in large-scale medical treatment reviews and recalls, including those affected by the treatment of Dr Michael Watt and women affected by complications arising from vaginal mesh procedures.
Our specialist Medical Negligence team understands the impact situations such as this can have on patients and their families and can provide advice regarding the issues arising from the recall process and the options available to those affected.
