£40,000 in damages following trip at work

A Unite member employed by a multinational firm based in Northern Ireland has secured a £40,000 settlement following a tripping accident in the workplace.

The member was entering his workplace through the main reception door when he tripped on a rubber mat that had become loose. This resulted in the member’s left foot becoming trapped which subsequently caused him to fall forward and hit the reception desk.

After attending a local hospital, he underwent numerous X-rays and was diagnosed as having sustained a fracture to the left inferior pubic ramus. He was consequently off work for 8 weeks whereby he relied on gratuitous care from his partner.

The personal injury team at Thompsons was instructed via Unite Legal Services to act on behalf of the member. We immediately had the member examined by a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon before having his clinical findings re-assessed and confirmed by a Consultant Radiologist. Upon completion of medical evidence, settlement discussions were entered into in an expedient manner resulting in a successful conclusion for the member without having to go to court.

The Unite member said: “I would certainly use Thompsons NI in the future. I am very pleased with the service and I would recommend Thompsons NI to others.”

Damien Watson, a PI solicitor at Thompsons NI, commented: “This case highlights the importance of employers ensuring that they provide a safe place of work for their employees and shows that this includes the reception area, not only the factory floor. We were delighted to assist in obtaining compensation for this Unite member in a timely fashion.”
