Neurology patients recalled by Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

The Belfast Health and Social care Trust is to recall more than 2,500 neurology patients following concerns that some patients may have been misdiagnosed. Neurology is the treatment of brain conditions such as Stroke, MS, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease.

The recall comes after a review of the work of neurology consultant, Dr Michael Watt who worked at Belfast City Hospital. Dr Watt also operated a private practice at the Ulster Independent Clinic until June 2017.

It is understood that concerns were initially raised in December 2016 by a GP about a patient’s diagnosis and treatment. Both the Trust and the Royal College of Physicians have carried out separate reviews of patients’ notes.

The Trust have described the situation as “serious” and issued an apology to patients and their families.

At Thompsons NI we have specialist clinical negligence solicitors with considerable experience of assisting and representing patients who have suffered as a result of medical mistakes including cases of delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis. We provide legal support to the brain injury charity, Headway and to the Child Brain Injury Trust (CBIT) in Northern Ireland.

If you have concerns about the treatment you have received, please contact Joanne Kerr or Oonagh McClure of our office for a free consultation.
